OUTPUT 1: NOVEL METHODS OF AIDING CONVENTIONAL PLANT BREEDING
The greatest success has been in the longest running programme of molecular markers in pearl millet where PSP has funded all the knowledge now available for marker-assisted selection for disease resistance and drought tolerance.
The first major milestone was achieved in 1993 with the creation of the first genetic map of the pearl millet genome.
MilletGenes, the first UK plant genome database, was initiated with DFID PSP funding and has now been incorporated into the BBSRC-funded UK CropNET Programme.
The first product of marker-assisted breeding to improve disease resistance
in pearl millet has recently been released in India

Some rice germplasm produced by marker-assisted selection
is already performing in farmers' fields in eastern India and very
promising results on a PSP innovation (marker-evaluated selection) are now
emerging and long-term impact will be after 2005.
